Unlike Pitchfork who couldn't come to an opinion, I'll say Leisure has cool vibe, similar to that brilliant Coconut Records album from a few years ago. Definitely a band from the northeast, you can hear it in their sound. I get the feeling Leisure is a couple key songs away from a clear direction moving forward that will open all kinds of doors. Pop isn't dead but I think there's a lot of unchartered ground to be covered here that will take Leisure to better places in the long run. It's tough not to like these guys. rating: cool Leisure - It's Alright (On the Suez Canal)
who says pop music is dead? not Angus and Julia Stone. just look at them and see stars. I'm sure that I'm late to the party here, been sitting on this for too long, but this one hits the spot pretty good. Catch this brother/sister duo from the northern beaches of Sydney (sounds amazing doesn't it) on tour at a theater or cemetary near you. now they just need a website I can find my way around (re: RSS) and life will be peachy. Angus and Julia Stone - Big Jet Plane
hey man look at me rocking out I'm on the radio...
If you're feeling all Lou Reed indie, listen here to Dirty Dancing's Magnet Kisses. These guys are a solid lo-fi duo with roots in the south and midwest. They bring back late 70's New York post-punk in a nice way. I like 'em a lot and predict bigger things than a writeup on this shitty no-name blog. Here's an interview with more about Dirty Dancing. Shout out to Covert Curiosity for the find. Dirty Dancing - Magnet Kisses
If you're feeling down, listen here to The Antlers covering VCR from the xx. It will make you question whether it's better than the original. A good cover adapts but doesn't evolve. Big word to my friend Francis who's been working so hard behind the scenes for them. Big word to Peter & co. for hanging in and making it so people have no choice but to listen. I miss my dog even more when I hear this one. The Antlers - VCR (the xx cover)
*if you're not feeling either right now, I don't know what to tell you. come back tomorrow.
Behold fathah muckers, The Tins. This is why I skip around so many horrible songs and bands that barely stand a chance at being derivative. I've listened to 'The Green Room' so many times in a row and it just keeps getting better. Check out their myspace page for more tunes and definitely buy their EP as soon as it's released. This song clocks in at 7:12 and not a second is wasted. Can't wait to see these guys when they come to LA. Today, my hat is off to The Tins. The Tins - The Green Room
Here's two songs from two Chicago bands that have absolutely nothing in common other than their regular rotation on my iTunes.
Nothing like gangsters who dance. And I don't mean like the Michael Jackson video. BBU (short for Bin Laden Blowin' Up) takes Chicago hip-hop somewhere new. Check this out.
Maps & Atlases is not just another indie act, mark it down now. Maybe I'm just a sucker for low-fi indie with just enough experimenting going on to make it different. I realize I'm late to the game here but I'm seeing Maps & Atlases next time they are in town (which just happens to be with Frightened Rabbit on May 23rd). See you there? BBU - Chi Don't Dance Maps & Atlases - Solid Ground
Are you down for Suckers? My friend Kier is and he's cool so I thought I'd check them out. They have a new single making the rounds ahead of their debut album coming out in June called Wild Smile. Suckers are from Brooklyn. No pun intended. I'm including here the track that got me into them from their EP that is still making the rounds a year later. Behold, Suckers. Suckers - Black Sheep Suckers - Easy Chairs
13 years after Biggie released Life After Death a guy named Charlie (aka Wait What) took it upon himself to create perhaps the most inspiring mashup album of all time set to the debut record from the xx. The music business is doing its usual kill & praise but these tracks aren't going away, or at least any faster than the Grey Album did.-high five to we all want someone for the find.
I really like this song. It's got a similar vibe as Hockey, who I still listen to all the time. Just enough edge but nothing revolutionary here. And most of the time that's fine with me as long as it's authentic. From their EP of the same name, check out 'Colors' from The Pass. It's a fact, great music comes out of Lousiville, KY. The Pass is no exception. So listen up and let me know what you think. Then CLICK HERE before the world ends and buy the full release on iTunes for only $4.99. The Pass - Colors
What started a few months ago with Surfer Blood has turned into more than a passing interest in the whole emerging surf post-punk scene. My newest obsession is Brooklyn's, The Drums. Managed by the one and only 3D and repped by Paradigm, The Drums are set for a big 2010 fresh off the release of a new single, 'Best Friend' (Moshi Moshi). The buzz that started with their last release Summertime is turning into a mini-movement. Several shows on their current UK run are sold-out. I'm hearing rumors that a fall tour stateside is a strong possibility. Let's hope. Here's a killer track and some tour dates for your Thursday afternoon wherever you are out there.
